To understand the Ole, you must understand his definitions. Ole and his circle of friends back at West Catholic High School developed a limited personal vocabulary. It consisted of one word: DORK
Since then, Ole has strived to create his own comprehensive personal vocabulary which he dubs his "Olean Definitions" (or for you Orwellians out there, "Olespeak". I will now show you the progress made (the list is anything but comprehensive as of yet, just bear with me)
Dork- This is the centerpiece of the Olean vocabulary and the point on which all other Olean terms hinge. A dork should not be viewed as a person to be avoided, but one to be celebrated.
A dork is a person outside the mainstream of society, one who inhabits his or her own little subculture.
Dorks are generally nondescript and will blend into any "normal" crowd. Only if one
looks closely will one find the interesting eccentricities (ie: several months of untamed
hair growth, the same colors of clothes worn every single day)
Dorks are very quiet in crowds (except for the more flamboyant dorks- more on that later)
but once one gets to know them, a different picture emerges. Dorks are good-natured
and very intellectual and knowledgeable about certain subjects. While they may lack
"book smarts", dorks always have extensive knowledge over a particular subject
that interests them. These subjects vary (and are rarely the popular obsessions of the
day. Ie: sports) and can include everything from the designs makes and models of modern
land development equipment (Ie: tractors, backhoes) to Japanese animation to computers. Dorks, more often than not, also have some unusual skills, such as baking or knitting (unusual for the gender anyway).
Dorks understand ridicule and being an outcast from the superficial majority and that
is why they become such nice people. They have dealt with their problems successfully
and have developed empathy. Dorks are good, upstanding people who should be sought
out and cherished.*
*Note: Dork is generally, but not exclusively, a male term.
Freak- Take away a dork's geniality, his social skills, and most of his specialized knowledge and you have a freak. These are the scary dorks that are apparently another species of human being (since they certainly can't function with their brethren) They are mean and nasty. One should feel sorry for them but one usually cannot due to their vicious, illogical personality. Freaks should be avoided at all times.
Geek- take away a dork's social skills and friendliness, but not his intelligence, and you have a geek. Geeks are very good at what they do but can not do anything else because of the fact that they can't communicate with the people around them. Geeks prefer to be, and should be, left alone.
Idiot- What everyone is, at one time or another.
Chick- General term for young woman (not based on appearance). Approximate
age 15-25.
Note: Are you offended by this one? Some people are.
Read a recent reply I gave to one such
offendee.
Bint- Deragatory term for woman. Reserved for stupid and/or nasty women.
Grand Moff- Important person (ie: Big Cheese, Head Honcho)
Superficial Majority- Blanket term for most of the people outside of the dork subculture(this includes most of the people of the entire culture.) These people lack one or more of the key elements to qualify as being a dork (ie: massive command of knowledge over a trivial subject.)
Abercrombie and Fitch Person- Term for an individual within the superficial majority. Most likely likes sports, is concerned over their girl/boyfriend of the minute, and enjoys taking illegal drugs.
Yoink- Onomotopeia term that must be spoken whenever one takes or picks up something.
Schyoink- Onomotopeia term that must be spoken whenever one puts something down or back.
These are some other terms gleaned from outside sources that were deemed worthy to include in the Glossary of Olean Terms.
