Once in a great while, I come across an item that is from my family's history that is also a historical artifact in its own right. It is hard to share these artifacts with others, since they are delicate and rare by nature. But now, thanks to the power of digitization and the internet, I can offer the next best thing to having them yourself - pictures!
Stephen Oleszkiewicz's World War I "Returning Home" booklet(pdf 42 MB)This booklet was written for American soldiers returning home from World War I. At this moment, the authorship of the booklet is unclear to me, but it may have been written by the French as a "thank you" for the American forces. It contains a short history of the battles the American army fought, statistics on what each country gave in the war, and a fair amount of information on French culture - apparently to clear up any misunderstandings the Americans may have had. Be warned, this pdf document is very large. I erred on the side of quality, rather than size. I recommend that you do NOT left-click on the link above. Right-click instead, and select "Save As..." to save the file to your computer. If you do this, it will probably take an hour or so to download even on a high-speed internet connection. Older computers may struggle to open and display the file. If you can open it, however, I did my best to enlarge the picture to the size of a normal 8.5x11 piece of paper - so you should have no trouble printing it. Note that the actual book is much smaller - perhaps double the size of a deck of cards. A big thanks goes to my uncle Donald Oleszkiewicz for providing this document! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If you happen to know anything more about this book, feel free to drop me a line. Back to the Project Website |
